Sello M:
Certified Authenticity

To recognise and celebrate those who promote authentic Mexican cuisine around the world, the Government of Mexico, through its Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Mexican Academy of Gastronomy, invites restaurants, food trucks, food stalls, pop-up dining experiences, and catering businesses to apply for the prestigious Sello M Seal of Authenticity.

This certification recognises venues that proudly preserve and showcase the true flavours, traditions, and culture of Mexico beyond its borders.

“True Mexican gastronomy is not merely prepared—it is inherited, respected, and protected for generations to come.”

What is Sello M?

Sello M is Mexico’s official recognition for authentic Mexican gastronomy outside Mexico. It recognises restaurants, food trucks, pop-ups, catering businesses and other food ventures that promote genuine Mexican cuisine overseas.

Who awards Sello M?

Sello M is awarded through Mexico’s Embassies and Consulates, with assessment support from the Academia Mexicana de Gastronomía. The official process involves expert review to help ensure quality, authenticity and transparency.

What does a restaurant need to prove to receive Sello M?

A business needs to show that its menu is based on Mexican recipes, uses Mexican ingredients or suitable local equivalents, respects traditional techniques and processes, and has at least one chef or cook with training or experience in Mexican gastronomy.

Why does Sello M matter for Australian diners?

For Australian diners, Sello M acts as a sign that a venue is offering Mexican food with a genuine connection to Mexican culinary tradition — not just a loose interpretation. In 2026, the first Sello M recognitions in Australia were awarded to eight venues, marking a major milestone for authentic Mexican cuisine locally.

What does a recognised business receive?

If approved, the business receives a Sello M adhesive seal, a formal recognition issued by the relevant Mexican Embassy or Consulate and the Academia Mexicana de Gastronomía, plus a certification document from the Academy.
